| TCI’s unique language laboratory and computer-based approach to learning English will enable you to rapidly build the skills you need to be successful in your college studies and beyond.
The Program 
TCI offers four different levels of ESL to meet the needs of students with a broad range of language skills. Intensive ESL is for students with limited English skills. Levels 1 - 3 provide instruction for students with increasing levels of English language proficiency. Students proceed to a full schedule of regular credit-bearing courses upon successful completion of Level 3. |

Placement in first semester ESL courses is based upon:
- the scores you achieve on the Accuplacer® Computerized Placement Assessment or the Combined English Language Skills Assessment (CELSA)
- an interview with a counselor
- your history of academic study in English

If you are applying from outside of the New York Metropolitan Area you may submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A score of 550 or above (213 computer-based) is a good indication that you may not need to study ESL and can take a full schedule of regular courses immediately. In most cases, the College will still make an assessment of your language skills and determine specific course placement when you arrive on campus. |

| Facilities that only a college can provide |
The Center at 500 Eighth Avenue is where most ESL classes are held. It's a small and friendly place where you will feel right at home.
- Classes in oral/aural communication use the College’s new Sony Language Laboratory. The lab is also available for additional study and practice outside of classes.
- Computer laboratories with language tutorials are available to supplement and reinforce your classroom learning.
- Oral communication courses have a strong audio-visual component for improved learning.

| The Main Building at Eighth Avenue and 31st Street is just two blocks away. It houses the College’s administrative offices, additional laboratory and classroom space, the College Library, and the Student Center and Lounge. |
